The Afghan girl’s cry for help

As a child, I often imagined I would die in front of my family or class mates and they would express their love to me and grieve over my dead body. This thought gave me a lot of satisfaction and even though I never really wished to be dead, just thinking I could be close to death assured me that I was loved and cared for.

Women’s day special: Pakistan

Samar Minallah is a prominent human rights activist and documentary film maker from Pakistan. Her documentary “Swara: bridge over troubled waters” analyses the Swara tradition, according to which a family gives one of its girls as compensation to an aggrieved family instead of blood money. Minallah actively speaks out against what she calls “culturally sanctioned forms of violence against women”  and condemns the “patriarchal mindset” behind such violence.

Does Afghanistan really want its women?

Women who dare to love, to pursue a career and women who refuse to be tied down by the conservative society are simply eliminated in Afghanistan.  To this day, tribal courts and the Taliban use the Sharia (Islamic law) and order punishments such as stoning and executions.  With a massive number of women falling prey to antiquated social customs, the obvious question is: does Afghanistan really want its women?

A promising future, conditions apply

The first time I met her, I noticed her branded handbag, her golden wrist watch, her light pink wrinkle-free coat and a black chiffon scarf carefully wrapped around her head. I wondered if that was what she was all about. In my next talk with her, I realised there was more to her than her impressive carriage and subtle, yet strong arguments.
