This week, we feature Afghan politician Shukria Barakzai. The outspoken female leader survived an attack on her car some days ago.

Barakzai is a member of parliament and is known for her strong views on women’s rights. She is also a close ally of President Ashraf Ghani. Barakzai never hesitated to criticize politicians and warlords in prominent positions. She also secretly ran an underground school for women during the Taliban rule until 2001.
