I’m not sure why, but we suddenly find ourselves talking about walking. The serious kind – with compass, map and boots. So I mention the fact that I’ve just come back from one of the most beautiful places on earth: the Lake District, in England’s North West, where I’ve been tramping the fells with friends. “Oh yes, a lovely part of the world,” he responds. So, you know the Lake District? “Yes, yes. From the time I served in Liverpool.” This worldly, suavely tweedy, gentleman served in Liverpool! He’s Gunter Pleuger, one of Germany’s outstanding diplomats of recent years – the man who chaired the UN Security Council in those tense days during the build-up to the Iraq War.
