Electronics Retailer Naushad Benson had told me about the prevalence of mobile phones and TVs in Tanzanian cities. But he also told me that people in the countryside still listen to their radios. So I was keen to see for myself while riding through rural parts of Western Tanzania. And yes, he was right! Tanzanians seem to listen to the radio while sitting, taking a break from corn harvest:

Naushad Benson is a Tanzanian businessman who has specialized in selling electronics. When I visited his shop in downtown Arusha, I asked him what kind of technology is most in demand in Tanzania. He told me that there is still a huge difference between cities and the countryside when it comes to media consumption and the use of technology.

Dedan Ireri is a bike messenger in Nairobi. He says that he might in fact be Nairobi’s only messenger on a bicycle. But Dedan Ireri is also an athlete with big ambitions in cycling. I first met him in Northern Kenya where he joined the Tour d’Afrique for some off road riding. I was quite amazed by his cycling skills and he passed me more than once on the corrugated roads and lava rock fields between Moyale and Marsabit.

Mount Kenya is fully covered in mist – so no picture for a Logo Quiz question today. But: can you guess which city I’m staying in that is located northwest of Kenya’s highest peak? It is a lovely little town of roughly 35.000 inhabitants. And it is the place where I just met Jane Mario Wacira. She is a businesswoman who runs a poultry farm and is proud of her achievements. “I am successful and I don’t need a man for that”, Jane says. Remember, it’s International Women’s Day! Jane had more insights: “You need to work harder as a woman in order to go to the top. But that is what we ladies are doing in Kenya.”

How does Jane stay informed? She watches the news every night on TV and reads the papers on weekends. And when staying at friends’ in Nairobi, she also tunes in to DW’s English television program.
