Hillary Clinton's European visit has been going well. On Friday, however, according to Reuters, she caused a bit of befuddlement in Brussels. The U.S. Secretary of State claimed that American democracy "has been around at lot longer than European democracy" and misspoke the names of the EU's foreign policy heavyweights Javier Solana and Benita Ferrero-Waldner. Bad faux pas? Not really. The "democracy" item is probably just a misunderstanding. It seems likely that Clinton - speaking at the European Parliament - was referring to the EU parliament and not European democracy. The European Parliament as an institution, of course, is a lot younger than U.S. democracy. That she misspoke the names of Solana and Ferrero-Waldner is slightly embarrassing, but not a major deal. It didn't cause any diplomatic problems and rather shows her human side.

Hillary Clinton needs to be very careful....she is holding a very important office but all the same she is human and every human being is subject to make mistakes like the way she 'mis-spoke' some names. To really say if she a well bred diplomat is a question of time.

Shit, the American people voted for Obama over Hillary and what does Obama do, appoint Hillary and her people to most of the jobs in his Administration. Seems more like Osamea.

That's kind of you to give her the benefit of the doubt. One has to wonder where this generosity was when Bush was in the White House. Or, more important, how soon will Obama's administration exhaust the well of European grace? The 24 hour hour cable TV/blog news cycle means every perceived gaffe is blown up into an international incident. See Damien's post. This is why Republicans clung to Bush. It's not that we approved of his mistakes. We were just tired of the constant, petty assaults. Disagree with his policies, fine. But not every mistake is "proof" that a politician is a "retard". But this was the template used against Bush. Not surprising that this line of attack is being used against my current President. And I'm sick of it, even though I would never vote for Obama.

Agreed, Damien. This would have been treated in the press as an international incident had it ocurred under the Bush Admin. The press laughs it off because it's Clinton and really because it's Obama. They're in love with Obama and as they say... "Love is blind"!

What it shows is that she doesn't belong in the top job at State. She also embarrassed us in front of Russia with that stupid "reset" gag, which not only had the wrong translation, but didn't even have the courtesy to put that wrong word into Russian. As an American, I'm ashamed to have this woman be our top diplomat. No wonder so many people think we're idiots.
