Pollster: Biden Not As Appealing To Voters As One Might Think

If the media are correct in their predictions, than Barack Obama will select the candidate with the biggest foreign policy resume as his running mate: Joseph Biden.

With news outlets from the Wall Street Journal to the Los Angeles Times agreeing that Biden's stock has shot up in recent days, and foreign policy becoming an ever more important topic in the campaign, the British Guardian lays out the case for Biden. Newsweek's The Stumper matches speculation with reporting to conclude that Biden will become Obama's vice presidential candidate. Jonathan Cohn at The Plank, as well as Steve Clemons at The Washington Note, agree that all circumstancial evidence points to the Delaware Senator and also agree that Biden wouldn't be the worst choice Obama could make.

Just for good measure, let's throw a contrarian view into the mix. It comes via Jim Wooten at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: "If there’s a politician in America who matches Obama for arrogance, it’s Joe Biden."

But the most useful take on Biden as a potential running mate is provided not by journalists but by a pollster. Nate Silver at Fivethirtyeight, to my knowledge, is the only one who has actually tried to figure out how a VP candidate Biden would fare with voters.

According to Silver, the veteran senator's favorable/unfavorable ratings are almost even and his strong unfavorables exceed his strong favorables. On the upside, Biden scores with older people, a group of voters where Obama is weak, and could shore up Pennsylvania for the ticket. Silver's verdict: Biden is not "quite as appealing to the electorate as the conventional wisdom seems to hold."

Joe Biden is a fighter. He didn't become and stay as a Democratic Senator for over 30 years because he wasn't a fighter. John McCain better dig up Reagan's grave and bring up back to life. Then make Reagan his VP. Because I don't see who McCain will put up that will over shadow Biden. Let's call it as it is, if it wasn't for the fact that Barack Obama was black, John McCain wouldn't even have a shot it hell. But unfortunately that even in 2008, America still needs to deal with this issue.

Show support for Obama Biden in 2008. Spread the word ... http://www.obamabidentshirts.com

Support our troops and God Bless America and it's allies!

I am finding difficult to understand why the (seeming) elated joy over Joe Biden. This isn't a person or name that lept to my mind when considering whom Barack Obama would pick. Didn't he also vote for the invasion of Iraq? If so, where's the howling over that?

A VP choice may not supposed to be thrilling, but comments I've seen with overjoyed Democrats and Democratic supporters seems a little....misplaced?

He should have picked Wes Clark. General Clark was exactly who he needed to run with him to shore up his total lack of experience. Biden is too much of a hot head and will definitely put his foot in his mouth just like in the past calling his state a slave state and his disparaging remarks about Indians. Pride goeth before destruction. Better for a fool to be quiet than to open his mouth and confirm the obvious.

Comparing Biden to Bush is like comparing Paris Hilton to the Pope!!! Thats crazy and i can tell your a republican by that comment! Or you dont know Joe Biden, after kerry lost, like 1-2 days after I saw him speak on MSNBC and CNN and he drew me to the television, when he talks, you listen, and he speaks the truth and doesnt sugar coat itl, wich to some is seen as a detriment but as an american going through the worst preidency in american history clouted with hidden scandels, I WANT someone openly honest who will tell it like it is ,damnit!

GO JOE!!!

O'BAMA/BIDEN '08

If Biden is the VP i will jump for joy,i live in california and supported Joe Biden too but he was out of the primarys by California so I voted for Obama, i PRAY obama respects mine and other peoples votes when they said they voted for him in hopes he would make biden his VP and i know ALOT OF PEOPLE who thought that way through the primarys , BIDEN WILL HELP OBAMA the best as long sa they make people realize the GOP are the true ELITISTS, hutnign qual and drinking tea on corporate jets...yes the dems arent perfect either but there not that bad and they MOST OF THEM arent as corrupt or just schemey looking.

Joe Biden will bring back honesty and transperity to the whitehouse even as VP, he will help obama and guide him with BIG issues abroad...did you notice Obama used to be for getting troops out now....and NOW he is adopting the Joe Biden position basically? DOESNT THAT TELL YOU biden is the nominee? Cmon people, read between the lines, and i hope im right, if biden is picked by obama,i will no longer be an undecided and I WILL be out in FULL FORCE for Obama/Biden '08!

Whoever Obama pick as his running mate is no concern of mine because I can not stand Obama. To me, he is UNAPPEALING.......I dont know why the american media portray him as a Rock Star & the New Camelot. He is just a flip flopper & full of promises. He wants to raise taxes too.
My two democratic relatives who are Hilary's supporter will be voting for McCain as a sign of Protest . Americans are not ready to vote for an african american candidate.

Obama is an Arrogant Bastard son of a polygamist kenyan father. No one knew about him because he was afraid to reveal his family secrets in public. His father has several wives & mistress & children out of wedlock. . Yesterday news reveal that one of his half brother in kenya was living in poverty in a shack hardly surviving.

Biden is a fantastic pick as he really was the most qualified person to run for president this year from either party.

Obama/Biden '08!

Not to be a jerk but those polls where Biden's negative numbers are greater than his positives... was aRASMUSSEN poll the official poll of FOXNews...lol. and it was likely voters in a mess of a poll. It interviewed repubs and dems...

Repubs don't like Biden...because he fights them. lol This poll is a good thing if it was even worth lookingat.

A lot of us are very happy to think that Obama might be smart enough to pick Joe Biden for his vice president, except that then the ticket will be upside down. Neither I nor my husband will vote for Obama unless he does pick Joe Biden, because we volunteered for Joe in Iowa for his presidential campaign. We didn't think he was arrogant at all, but candid and genuine. Perhaps you think a politician is arrogant if he actually speaks his mind instead of tip-toeing carefully around issues. He is confident about what he is saying and all of his Democratic opponants in Iowa said more than once that "Joe is right" when answering questions in debates.

"his strong unfavorables exceed his strong favorables." You got to be kidding me. what exactly are his strong unfavorables that overshadow his knowledge and personal relationships with world leaders? Oh, he talks too much? He's too honest? Give me a break. Im a first time voter and have no problem with joe Biden.

Joe is the Democratic equivalent of George Bush. An overconfident foot-in-mouth, bottom of his law school, Plagiarist. He gave Iraq go-to-war authorization, and has the age perception of a McCain. Joe is a hard-core Washington insider (signals anti-change). In short, he is such an opposite to the message Obama has relied on that he would destroy Obama's credibility and be more fodder for Republicans.
