Did Obama Get A Bounce From His European Trip?

At least since Barack Obama appeared in front of an excited crowd of 200,000 in Berlin, there was the question lurking whether his trip would give him a boost in the polls. Two new surveys, one by CNN, the other by Gallup try to answer that question. Both polls show that the race is all but over, but the rest is - as usual - up for interpretation.

While Charlie Cook at the National Journal thinks Obama may have benefited from his trip and may be gaining momentum, Rachel Marsden at Human Events sees a virtual tie in the polls that the Democratic candidate's cheerleading squad just chooses to ignore.

For Andrew Malcolm the new polls even beg the question 'Where did Barack Obama's mojo go' which Todd Beeten tries to answer at Mydd.

Do we at Across the Pond think Obama benefited from his trip? Tim wrote about it long before the current polls were out and his summary is still worth reading.

I don't think it did anything significant for his poll numbers, but it did curtail any attempts for the McCain camp to further beat the "inexperience" [at least about foreign diplomacy] drum.

I was elated to see that Berliners responded to Barack exactly as I responded 4-years ago, when I first listened to the man speak - with excitement! It's great to think we will again have a President that can actually speak to us as intelligent people. Enough of the fear-mongering from the current administration. Barack realizes we must work together as a world community again - and that I find refreshing. All I can say is Obama -O8!

The "where did Obama's mojo go?" story is the most recent (maybe) of several stories declaring any of the last several weeks as "bad for Obama" despite the fact that he has remained ahead nationally and in every state he was expected to win by virtue of his being a Democrat.

It's as if all the stories of Obama's charm, good looks, rhetorical powers et. al. led the reporters that wrote those stories to assume he was going to win 98% of the electorate.

Barack Obama is the Democratic Party's candidate for president in a country where Democrats get almost exactly 50% of the vote. McCain is the Republican Party candidate in a country where Republicans get about 50% of the vote. Obama was never going to sweep all the Republicans into the Democrat fold. He is performing about as well as should have been imagined.

So the short answer to whither his mojo? is "nowhere." It is worth noting that McCain has been dumping most of his campaign money into Pennsylvania and has yet to cut into Obama's lead there. Meanwhile Obama has been dumping alot of money into Pennsylvania but not proportionately as much. Which means that when McCain has to give up the Keystone state to Obama, Obama will already be waiting to run strong campaigns wherever McCain tries to go. (except Texas which Obama is ignoring).

Did he get a Germany bump? Probably not. Americans want to hear Obama talk about the economy. But he certainly silenced McCain's trash talking on this one score...and they'll probably think twice before double dog daring him to do something else imminently presidential.
