Barack Obama Will Speak At Victory Column, Not Brandenburg Gate

Barack Obama will give his much talked about Berlin speech at the city's monumental victory column, not at historic Brandenburg Gate. Berlin dailies Berliner Zeitung and Berliner Morgenpost both report that a stage will be set up at the victory column so that Brandenburg Gate will be visible in the background. According to the Morgenpost, Obama's public appearance at the victory column is scheduled for 7 pm on July 24. Both papers report that the Obama campaign will announce its Berlin plans today in Chicago.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, who had voiced objections against an Obama speech at Brandenburg Gate, will meet with the Democratic presidential candidate in the chancellory next Thursday morning.

Regardless how one feels about Obama's trip abroad, the victory column is a great choice for a public venue. Of course, there is the highly symbolic name celebrating Prussian victories over Denmark, Austria and France. However, the location of the monument is equally striking. It lies in the center of Berlin's great Tiergarten park surrounded by a circle of boulevards called Großer Stern. The elegance and beauty of this place was captured best in the movie Wings of Desire by German director Wim Wenders. But it also featured prominently in the world's biggest techno event, love parade, while it was still in Berlin. And finally, its German name, Siegessäule, is also the title of Berlin's gay magazine.

Makes me wonder if there is not a particular reason he wants to speak at a place with the same name as the German gay magizine. He seems to support the gay cause in a number of different ways.

It's nice to see Obama in Europe, and Germany. Hopefully the EU can see the thoughtfulness and faith that oozes through his inspirational speeches. The senator's business sense will need to be debated, although to many of us back in the states, Barack really does represent change for our country (USA) that is greatly needed following the horrors of this current administration.

It looks like Germans came through for our Lad. Somehow we don't like it if our candidate gets dissed around in foreign countries even if we make a pastime of chuckling at his foibles and neuroses, whoever the candidate happens to be. Actually that's not true, many of us were quite delighted when Germans dissed Bush serially over the past few years, so I guess we have a double standard there. Let;s just say we did not want this Brown Candidate dissed at this very critical time. Yall can diss McCain all you like, we will just laugh along and if ya wanna laugh at Barry, why go right ahead. We OK with that too.

Thanks Berlin, whoever came up with this had a good idea, especially the stage thang, with the Brandenburg Gate in the background. Thanks Berliner Zeitung and Morgenpost, we thrilled by your lovely news. Grober Stern apparently means Great Star. That's lovely.

I wiki ed Victory Column Berlin and got the info and also that it had first been near the Reichstag and moved here by the Nazis. Somehow, I think Rush Limboo and Seanie Poo Hammity will manage to work those lil items into their broadcasts.

Angie Baby, you did OK, you can speak on the National Mall in front of the Lincoln Memorial or the obelisk any time you like.

Steinmeier and Wowereit, you guys did fine too.

Erwin Huber, nyahhahahahah. Boo to you. Barry is speaking, Barry is speaking. At the Victory Column, nyahahahahhaahah.

Keep our Lad safe folks, we wanna it to go flawlessly and fun.

I don't know about the rock star and bells and whistles part, that can get so old so fast. I prefer cool and hilarious myself.

And the food, Barry, the food, go to the train stations Barry, they have great juices and coffees and things like that. It's the posh restaurants you wanna stay away from. (OK, you can go there too as long as you call ahead and order lots of vegetables and huge salads).

Ciao bello, enjoy. Berlin looks real fine today.

I wish it was a bit later because I'm leaving for Pragie before midnight. Let's hope he'll be there on time... I hope the U-bahn will take me to Charlottenburg's Theodor Heuss Platz in an hour or so... Thanks for the post!

I want to thank Berlin and the German politikos with coming up with even a better solution then I thought possible for B’s big speech to Europe.

I think that the Victory Column in Pariser Platz
is a going to be a wonderful venue for Barack Obama.
(It’ll be interesting to see if Berlin can pull this off without a hitch.)

Let’s hope Barack has something to say worthwhile to the Europeans that plays to their 21st century needs, and also works for the Mid-Western voter in St. Louis, Missouri as well…

but personally?
I would go for the rock star speech…
totally focused on Europeans needs and American expectations for the next decade.
Give them what they want to hear. I would not hesitate to pull out all the bells and whistles.

Good Luck B
See you in Berlin !
